Gilded landscapes, intricate calligraphy, abstract portraits and glistening ceramics take the spotlight at the faculty exhibit at the COM Art Gallery on display through Dec. 2.

“COM professors are all working artists,” said COM Art Gallery Director Mayuko Ono Gray. “This exhibit demonstrates their talent and shows students what they can learn to do.”

Photography professor Kristy Peet, who has a Masters of Fine Art in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design, featured work first created for an invitational exhibition in conjunction with Fotofest 2016. Her work incorporates red glitter and gold leaf superimposed on stunning black and white landscape photographs.

Art professor George Bowes, who earned a Master of Fine Art from the University of California at Davis, combined drawings, photographs and ceramics into a vivid abstract display, pulling pieces from nearly 14 years of work.

“I’m thinking of it as a demented board game,” said Bowes.

Art professor Mark Greenwalt, who has a Master of Arts from Stephen F. Austin State University and a Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in New York, creates synthetic portraits combining Renaissance imaging techniques with modernist sensibilities.

“Mutating through multiple cycles of growth and decay, my figures originate from drawing surfaces in which imagery is repeatedly formed, deformed and reformed,” Greenwalt said.

Ono Gray, who has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Houston, presented drawings influenced by Japanese calligraphy, weaving characters with detailed portraits.

Committed to making contemporary artwork accessible, the COM Art Gallery is free and open to the public. The gallery is located in the Fine Arts Building and open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, one hour before COM Community Theatre performances and by appointment.
