Seeking to promote the cause of community college students, the Texas Junior College Student Government Association represents the more than 730,000 students enrolled at community colleges across Texas. College of the Mainland has sought to become more connected with the organization regionally and been named the parliamentarian school for the Texas Junior College Student Government Association Region V. Region V is comprised of 20 schools including Houston Community College and San Jacinto College.

COM Student Government Association president Marion McDaniel will fill the post of parliamentarian and ensure that meetings follow procedures.

“I was nervous when I submitted my application for the parliamentarian position,” said McDaniel. “When they called my name, I had the biggest smile on my face. I was shocked to be accepted and have College of the Mainland once again have a seat on the Texas Junior College Student Government Association Region V executive board. I will try to do my best to make College of the Mainland and my fellow officers proud of such a great achievement.”

The COM Student Government Association seeks to facilitate a greater participation in the democratic process, instill leadership among the student body, and promote goodwill and unity among other colleges as well as among our faculty, staff, student body and community. Involvement in the regional branch of the national student organization allows students to connect with other students and learn from other effective student governments.

“Being active in the Student Government Association Region V is a good way to network with other schools and demonstrate leadership,” said advisor Sean Skipworth.

The SGA coordinates COM student clubs and represents all students at monthly board meetings and events such as the Community College Leadership Day with state representatives in Austin.
