Scholarship recipient Krystal Chaisson

New and returning students may apply by March 31 for College of the Mainland Foundation scholarships open to students with a variety of majors, grade point averages and interests.

The easy online application may be completed at www.com.edu/scholarships.

For scholarship recipient Krystal Chaisson, the timing could not have been better. When the COM student learned she was receiving a $1,000 scholarship from Amoco/BP, she was thrilled.

“It was miraculous,” she said. “I was working on how to pay for college. Now I can start saving for Texas State University.”

Chaisson, of Santa Fe, qualified for the scholarship as a Galveston County resident and full-time student with a 2.0 grade point average or better.

Chaisson applied for multiple scholarships listed on the COM website.

“The cool thing about the website is that you write one essay and you’re done. You didn’t have to worry anymore,” she said.

Chaisson also receives financial assistance through the COM work-study program and works part-time in the Academic Success Department Office.

A member of the national community college honor society Phi Theta Kappa, Chaisson will complete her associate degree in general studies in May. She plans to attend Texas State University in San Marcos, where she wants to pursue a bachelor’s degree in English with the goal of teaching middle school English.

“It feels like yesterday I started at COM. I can’t walk around campus without seeing a friend or old instructor,” she said. “I will visit the (Texas State University) campus in a week. I’m really excited to go.”
