COMPeers donated 1,143 Box Tops for Education Feb. 28 to San Leon Elementary.From

the first time, two COM theatre majors (Fayad and Land) were nominated for the Irene
Ryan Award for their performances in "C.O.M. Wasn’t Built In A Day." This meant they
(and their scene partners – Cailey Miller and Zachary Dockal) got to compete in the
Irene Ryan acting competition at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival
Region 6 Festival. Out of 160 plus duos performing, both Tyler and Mackenzie were
in the Top 50. Mark Greenwalt, professor of art, was invited by the University of
Texas-Medical Branch and Galveston Art Center to participate in an art and anatomy
drawing event. Drawing anatomy traditionally helps both medicine and art students
memorize and map structures according to their relations, proportions and morphology.
Ninety-one students, faculty members and community members attended. COM art students
visited the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Ron Mueck exhibit.
Laura Baumgartner, director of CE industrial workforce programs and Community College Petrochemical Initiative
steering committee member, served on the planning committee for the second annual
Women in Industry Conference Feb. 17. The conference hosted 516 attendees from six
colleges and 10 ISDs. Baumgartner facilitated two breakout sessions “Cultural Expectations
in Nontraditional Careers" with Susan Phillips as the guest speaker from Tellespen. Next
year’s event will be Feb. 16, 2018.
Matthew Busby, advancement officer, was elected president of the Texas Association of Community
College Foundations during the recent annual conference in Austin.
