Participants will learn how to make workplaces safer with two no-cost classes at the Gulf Coast Safety Institute in August: Electrical Regulations Governing Safe Workplaces on Aug. 5 and Nuts and Bolts of Industrial Hygiene on Aug. 19.

Electrical Regulations Governing Safe Workplaces covers Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements for electrical safety practices. The class will discuss employer and employee responsibilities, OSHA penalties and noncompliance, how to identify hazards, and selection and care of personal protective equipment.

Instructor Bill Smith is a registered Texas professional engineer and Texas licensed master electrician. He completed an electrical apprenticeship at Union Carbide in Texas City before earning an electrical engineering degree. Smith has been an instructor for over 30 years.

Nuts and Bolts of Industrial Hygiene covers the art and science of the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, communication and control of hazards in the workplace. In practice, industrial hygiene is how professionals measure whether or not someone might get sick or hurt at a job. The class will discuss how to determine what the industrial hygiene program should look like at each participants' facility.

Instructor Toby Holowaty serves as the safety, health and environmental manager for the bioastronautics contract at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. He is a certified safety professional by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and a certified industrial hygienist by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. 

All classes are sponsored by Texas Mutual Insurance Company and presented at the Gulf Coast Safety Institute at 320 Delany Rd. in La Marque.
