The award-winning College of the Mainland Jazz Ensemble will present a free concert showcasing their versatility on classics from swing to funk May 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the COM Fine Arts Building.

From “Dat Dere to “Star Eyes,” standards in the jazz repertoire will receive the Jazz Ensemble’s unique spins.

“The concert will present a variety of musical selections played with three different jazz feels – swing, funk, and Latin,” said director Sparky Koerner. “This arrangement allows four soloists to create their own melodies to the famous tune Duke Ellington's ‘Take the A Train."

Dizzy Gillespie's Birk's Works will be played in the style of a mambo. Kim Chavez will be featured on the famous trumpet piece “I Can't Get Started.”

The COM Jazz Ensemble has played across the nation and won awards at the Jazz Education Network Conference. COM vocal and instrumental ensembles are open to community members and students who want to play in a collaborative environment.
