A new class of graduates will soon be ready to answer the call of duty.

On Friday, May 23, 30 cadets will graduate from College of the Mainland's (COM) Peace Officer Academy.

Highlights of the ceremony will include recognition of the top cadet for scholastics, as well the recipients of the Goerlich and Lem Powell Awards.

Named after a cadet diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer while enrolled in the academy, the Goerlich Award for Leadership is given to a student who, in the words of Program Director B.J. Whitburn, "selflessly pushes others to do better."

The Lem Powell Award commemorates recently deceased, long-time instructor and range master Lem Powell and is given to the cadet with the top shooting score combination of marksmanship, low light, no light, tactical skills, shotgun and patrol rifle.

The COM Peace Officer graduation ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 23.
