The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system was developed to allow the emergency capabilities of the hospital to be used at the scene of the emergency to initiate care of patients. Students can begin their EMS career at the Emergency Medical Technician Basic Level and progress to the Advanced and Paramedic levels.

Fire Academy
The Day Fire Academy is a classroom-based course with all curriculum and skills being completed during class. However, the curriculum is web enhanced with course materials available online through the Blackboard Learning System. Cadets are required to complete assignments and chapter tests online.

Law Enforcement
The Peace Officer Academy is designed to provide graduates the necessary basic training to obtain a position as a police officer, constable, deputy sheriff or any other licensed peace officer position within the state of Texas. All courses must be taken together and successfully passed for the graduate to test for state licensure.

Medical Assisting
Prepare to succeed in a rapidly growing field with the College of the Mainland Medical Assisting program. In three semesters of hands-on and online classes you will learn anatomy and physiology, human disease and pathophysiology, medical terminology, medical insurance, medical law, pharmacology and administration of medicine, clinical procedures and laboratory procedures.

Pharmacy Technician
The COM Pharmacy Technician Certification program prepares students to pass the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and launch a successful career.
Students take part in hands-on classes learning how to measure, label, mix and dispense prescription medications while working under licensed pharmacists. The program is nationally accredited through the American Society of Health System Pharmacists.

Web Design
A concentrated one-year program prepares students for careers in web design and video production. Through hands-on training, students learn what the pros know about web design including site navigation, information architecture, preparing images for the web, color on the web and typography for the screen.

Whether you’re looking to advance your career, switch careers or achieve personal growth, we offer a wide range of programs for everyone that can be completed in a year or less.

Certified nurse aides help patients of all ages perform basic daily tasks under a nurse’s supervision. They are active and may need to help lift or move patients. Attention to safety, compassion, communication and critical-thinking skills are essential because patients depend on your care.
Certified nurse aides are in demand in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospices, hospitals and long-term care settings.

Phlebotomy
COM’s Phlebotomy Technician Program is a noncredit, nontransferable program to prepare students for the workforce. Through classroom instruction, labs and clinical rotations, students are trained to succeed in this fast-paced yet rewarding health care field.
Students learn types of blood collections, proper techniques and universal precautions. Students also can participate in the clinical setting, which allows them to apply the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom.

EKG Technician
The EKG Technician program trains students to become EKG technicians through a combination of classroom and clinical instruction that prepare the student for employment in the health care setting. Students learn in labs and classes and gain connections through clinicals at local health care facilities.

Industry-recognized credential upon passing national certification exam
Massage Therapy
Massage therapists manipulate the soft tissue of one’s body by hand or through a mechanical or electrical apparatus for therapeutic purposes. A licensed massage therapist works in an array of settings, such as spas, franchised clinics, physicians’ offices, hotels, cruise ships and fitness centers.

HVAC
COM’s Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) Program prepares students for a successful career as an HVAC technician and/or installer through hands-on training. HVAC technicians work with systems in commercial offices, industrial complexes, manufacturing plants, schools, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, construction, and residential homes.

Pipefitting
COM’s NCCER Industrial Pipefitting Program prepares students for a successful career in an entry-level position as a pipefitter helper often leading into a pipefitter career. Pipefitters lay out, assemble, install and repair pipelines or pipe systems that carry water, steam, air or other liquids or gases for industrial production and process systems.

Adult Education
Whether you’re here to pursue a better job, earn more money at work, learn English or finish your high school diploma, our Adult Education programs make it possible. Our comprehensive programs are designed to prepare adults 16 and over to take their High School Equivalency (HSE) and/or English as a Second Language (ESL) exams.

High school equivalency classes develop the reading, writing and math skills needed to pass a Texas high school equivalency exam. These classes are also a great place to improve skills to move into a workforce training program at COM.
ESL
English as a second language classes help students improve their everyday English, get ready to attend college or learn new job skills. Classes cover reading, writing, listening and speaking the English language.
