CLEP: College Level Examination Program

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows you to earn college credit for what you already know by passing an exam. With 34 introductory-level subjects available, CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the nation, helping you save time and tuition costs on your degree.

College of the Mainland administers all CLEP exams; however, it does not accept/award credit for all CLEP exams. Visit this list to ensure what CLEP exams are accepted before registering.

Fast Facts: What to Expect

  • Total Duration: Approx. 90–120 Minutes
  • Location: Administration Building, Suite 215
  • ID Required: Valid Government-issued Photo ID with Signature
  • Results: Available immediately (except for College Composition)
  1. Visit http://clep.collegeboard.org/register/exam to purchase a voucher.
  2. Schedule an exam time at COM: Book Online Now 
  3. A valid/current picture ID is required for all exams, your CLEP admission ticket includes identification requirements.
  4. A $29 Proctor Fee is due when an appointment is made online. (Fee is waived for COM students and the military.)

  • Take: Free Online Courses for CLEP exams through Modern States and Free Practice Test provided by Mometrix.com
  • Voucher Required: You must bring a printed or digital copy of your College Board Registration Ticket to the test
  • Review: COM Testing Center policies.

When you register for your exam at CLEP.CollegeBoard.org, you will be asked where you want your scores sent.

  • During Registration: Search for "College of the Mainland" (Score Reporting Code: 6134). Your first score report is usually free if selected at the time of the exam.
  • After the Exam: If you’ve already tested, you must log in to your College Board account and "Request a Transcript" for a fee (typically $20 per transcript).
Residency Requirement: You must have completed at least 6 credit hours and have them appear on your official COM transcript before any CLEP credits can be awarded.
