COM Celebrates First Graduating Dental Hygiene Cohort

College of the Mainland (COM) marked a milestone on Wednesday, May 6, celebrating the pinning of its first cohort of dental hygiene graduates from the college’s dental hygiene program. The cohort of 12 students began the program in fall 2024 and represent COM’s support for the expanding workforce and increased access to oral healthcare in our region.
“We didn’t just complete a program—we helped shape it,” said Charis Beck, COM dental hygiene graduate. “And that’s the true meaning of being first—not just achieving something new but opening the door for others to have a path to follow.”
Seven students have already passed the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination, with additional results pending. The cohort is scheduled to take the American Board of Dental Examiners dental hygiene exam on May 12, the final step required for licensure. Upon successful completion, graduates are expected to enter the workforce as early as July 2026, with several already securing job offers.
“The graduation of our first Dental Hygiene cohort reflects the success of a program built with intention, quality and a strong commitment to community service,” said Dr. Rebecca Montz, dean of instruction. “Throughout their training, our students have delivered compassionate, high‑quality care to community patients. COM is proud to prepare competent, compassionate dental hygienists who are well equipped to make a lasting impact on oral health across our region.”
The program’s on-campus dental hygiene clinic has played a vital role in both student training and community impact. Under the supervision of licensed dentists and faculty, students gain hands-on experience while providing affordable oral health care to the public.
Since opening, the clinic has served 592 patients across eight cities, delivering more than $300,000 in care and saving patients an average of $511 per visit. In addition to routine services, students and faculty have identified four cases of oral cancer, referring those patients for further diagnosis and treatment.
“COM is proud to see this program making a meaningful impact through both workforce training and community service,” said COM President Dr. Helen Brewer. “Our dental hygiene clinic has expanded access to affordable oral healthcare for hundreds of patients while giving students the opportunity to apply their education in a real-world setting. This program reflects COM’s commitment to meeting the needs of our region and investing in the future of healthcare.”
