Mainland Medical Center Auxiliary Donates $30,000 Toward COM Scholarships

Mainland Medical Center Auxiliary (MMCA) has made numerous generous donations to College of the Mainland (COM) for more than 25 years. MMCA reached a new milestone when they presented a check for $30,000 to COM during the College's April Board of Trustees meeting. This donation brought their monetary donation total to more than $328,000 toward phlebotomy, nursing and other allied health scholarships.

The Salon at College of the Mainland Hosts Senior Spa Day

Last Monday, the sounds of blow dryers and small talk filled the College of the Mainland (COM) Salon as cosmetology students serviced and pampered local senior citizens. Organized through efforts of COM's Student Life Department, this is the second senior spa day that the COM Salon has been able to host. Offering complimentary manicures and hair trims, students were able to apply the skills they've learned in class on well-deserving community members.

COM Offering Free Tax Preparation Services through April 4

College of the Mainland (COM) is offering free assistance to help students and the community navigate the process of filing tax returns during a series of on-campus tax preparation services now through April 4. In partnership with United Way Galveston County Mainland's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, the free tax preparation services are open to students and community members who qualify.

Audiences will soon have the opportunity to enjoy the first College of the Mainland (COM) Theatre production in the soon-to-be completed Fine Arts Building when "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" makes its production debut on Feb. 9. A dark and suspenseful musical, the show is filled with vengeance and horror, and features a mixed cast of community members, theatre majors and high school students aspiring to major in theatre at COM.

COM Students Converge on Capitol During Community College Day in Austin

The hallways of the state capitol were a little more lively on Jan. 26 as 20 College of the Mainland (COM) students converged with hundreds of community college students and staff during Community College Day in Austin. In an ongoing effort through the Texas Association of Community Colleges, the event allows community college students to learn about state government, meet their state representatives and ask questions about issues affecting community college students.

College of the Mainland receives national grant for robotics program

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded College of the Mainland (COM) a $307,758 grant to build a new program in Robotic Process Automation Career Training (RPACT). The RPACT project will establish a new career pathway for COM students through a workforce program that supports industry-recognized Robotics Process Automation (RPA) tool certifications and offers cooperative work-based learning opportunities. Among the community colleges in Texas, COM will be the first to offer an RPA technology workforce program of this type.

COM will host RN to BSN Open House on August 4

College of the Mainland (COM) invites the community to explore a rewarding future in nursing during its Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) open house on Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. in the STEAM Building, Room 120 at the COM main campus. Prospective students will discover all that COM's renowned nursing program has to offer during the interactive event where students can complete an on-the-spot application and pre-advising, participate in nursing facility tours, meet with nursing faculty and more.
