Our History and Mission

The Gulf Coast Safety Institute (GCSI) was established following a historic $5 million bequest from Eva Rowe in April 2007, part of a settlement related to the 2005 Texas City oil refinery explosion.

These funds, along with up to $2 million in matching community donations from BP for a memorial scholarship, were used to create a cutting-edge occupational safety and health program at College of the Mainland.

Today, the institute's curriculum is designed to meet Certified Safety Professional (CSP) standards and provide thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations.
