QEP Student Guidelines

  1. All current COM students are welcome to apply.
  2. The four final participants will each be awarded a $50 VISA card and a certificate.
  3. Participants may choose a suggested speech from the provided list or another speech that they like or that has impacted their lives.
  4. If multiple students request to give the same speech, the first student to enter the Words Day event will be allowed to present it.
  5. Speeches must be a minimum of 5 minutes and no more than 10 minutes. If the original speech is more than 10 minutes, students must cut it down as they see fit.
  6. If during the presentation, speeches exceed ten minutes, the QEP director may stop students from proceeding with their speech.
  7. Students will introduce their speeches. Speech introductions will be no more than one minute.
  8. We reserve the right to deny a speech application based on its content.
  9. Application deadline is March at 5:00 p.m.
  10. The Words Day will be April 5 at 12:30 p.m. in the college auditorium, and will be limited to four participants. Students will audition their speeches on March 20 and March 22. The committee will select the top four for the final event.
  11. This is an interpretation of the historic words, not an impersonation. Students should not mimic an original speaker’s accent or mannerism. They may put their own emphasis on the words.
  12. Either speeches with note cards or memorized speeches are acceptable.
  13. PowerPoints and props are not permitted.
  14. Students should wear professional dress. Costumes are not permitted.
  15. The contest will be videotaped and/or posted online. Students must agree to have their work recorded and posted online.
