Jump into action as nurse, detective or welder at COM summer camps

High school students can investigate a crime scene, explore firefighting or learn about health care fields during hands-on career explorations camps this summer.

College of the Mainland offers four camps: Cosmetology and Child Development Career Exploration Camp (June 13-16, 8 a.m. to noon), Public Service Career Exploration Camp, Industrial Trades Career Exploration Camp or Nursing and Allied Health Career Exploration Camp (June 20-23, 8 a.m. to noon).

Tuition is $75 per camp, which includes hands-on experiences with professionals to help students determine what best suits their talents and interests.

In the Cosmetology and Child Development Career Exploration Camp, students will learn skills such as how to braid, safety straighten hair with a flat iron and use paraffin wax treatments. They will also explore COM’s Child Development Lab School and observe teachers in action.

The Public Service Career Exploration Camp will demonstrate how professionals serve each day. Students will discover crime scene investigation techniques, learn first aid and basic emergency medical technician skills and observe an introduction to firefighting.

The Nursing and Allied Health Career Exploration Camp will offer a peek into the fast-paced world of health care, including nursing, medical assistant and physical therapy aide careers. Students will observe how to insert an IV, learn CPR and first aid and discover which branch of health care may best fit their skills.

The Industrial Trades Career Exploration Camp will dive into safety, mechanical maintenance and machining.

“They are fun, active camps with hands-on experience. Each camp will give students a little taste of what it might be like to work in that field,” said Kelli Frederick, CTE career specialist.

In all four camps, students will learn about professions as well as how to complete a college application and apply for financial aid to any college.

Students may be incoming high school freshman to recently graduated seniors.
