There are two types of loans in the Federal Direct loan program:

  • Subsidized – The federal government pays the interest on a subsidized loan while a student remains enrolled in school at least 6 credit hours (half-time), during the grace period, and during authorized deferment periods.
  • Unsubsidized – The student/parent assumes responsibility for paying the interest on this loan during all periods. However, the borrower can defer the interest payments until the borrower enters repayment.
Dependent Students

Mark loan type and amount(s) requested:

Maximum for a 1st year student is $3500.
Maximum for 2nd year/ continuing students is $4500.


Maximum for a 1st-year student is $5500 minus any subsidized loanawarded.
Maximum for a 2nd year student is $6500 minus any subsidized loanawarded.


Maximum amount is cost of attendance minus other financial aid.

Independent Students

Mark loan type and amount(s) requested:

Maximum for a 1st year student is $3500.
Maximum for 2nd year/ continuing students is $4500.


Maximum for a 1st year student is $9500 minus any subsidized loan awarded.
Maximum for a 2nd year/continuing student is $10,500 minus any subsidized loan awarded.
