Respondus Monitor and Amazon Web Services

UPDATE: Services were fully restored as of 6:00 AM Thursday, November 26, 2020.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) are currently experiencing widespread slowdown and outages affecting many vendors – including Respondus Monitor services.  This is NOT currently impacting Respondus tests set up WITHOUT webcam monitoring.

Students currently attempting to login and take a test using the Respondus Monitor service will be greeted with an error about the AWS outage.  Students still experiencing issues once the AWS outage is resolved should start a live chat or submit a ticket for support with Respondus at https://web.respondus.com/student-help/.

Unfortunately this is well outside of our control, but Respondus is aware of the issue and working with AWS to fix the problem.

Planned Power Outage

College of the Mainland will have a planned power outage event related to construction on main campus Saturday, November 14, 2020 starting at 7:00 AM for up to 12 hours.  We do not anticipate any connectivity issues with Blackboard during this time, but we cannot rule out any issues outside of our control impacting access to the learning management system, so please plan accordingly.

Blackboard Site Maintenance Nov 5th

Do Not Use Internet Explorer or Edge Web Browser

Many students are having issues when using Internet Explorer or Edge web browsers to do assignments in Blackboard. Please note these are not supported browsers. The most compatible browsers with Blackboard are Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

Respondus Lockdown Browser

Students: Your instructor may require you to use Respondus LockDown Browser for exams or quizzes. You will need to install this browser and use it instead of Chrome or Firefox to login to Blackboard and take your test. Click the link at the top of this page to access the download page. If you are trying to access an exam and it says you need a password, that means you are not using the LockDown Browser!

When Will I Get Access To My Classes?

Courses are not available until the official start date of the class.

You cannot log into Blackboard until you register for a class. Have you registered for the Online Learner Workshop within the past few hours? Check the Access Schedule to find out when you will get access based on when you registered. 

Blackboard Mobile App

The Blackboard app is available for students in the Apple and Android app stores. Download the app to access Blackboard, get grades, and participate in discussions on the go.

(Note: We recommend you take exams and quizzes using a wired ethernet connection)

Respondus LockDown Browser does not work on mobile devices.

Blackboard Instructor is available for instructors on Android and iOS.

Known Issues

Blank Documents Submitted For Assignments

Description: When using Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 operating system, a document that is submitted to an assignment is blank. This occurrs when the file is open in a program on the computer at the time of submission. This causes Edge browser to submit a size 0KB blank document.

Solution 1: Make sure the document is closed in Microsoft Word or other applications before submitting the file with Edge browser.

Solution 2: Use a different web browser that does not suffer from this bug, such as Chrome or Firefox.

Course Copy

Instructors can now perform a course copy.

Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor

Training videos for Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor are located in Blackboard. To view them, go into your Blackboard course and find Respondus Lockdown Browser under Course Tools.

Single Sign-On

Blackboard and COM email share the same login page. Once logged in, users can access Blackboard and COM email simultaneously from the same session. If you have bookmarked our Blackboard login page, please remove it and bookmark this announcements page instead.
