What is CLEP?

The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) gives you the opportunity to receive college credit for what you already know by earning qualifying scores on any of 34 examinations. You can earn credit for knowledge you've acquired through independent study, prior course work, on-the-job training, professional development, cultural pursuits or internships.

Photo IDs are required for all testing.

Steps to register for CLEP

  1. Go to and create an account to purchase a voucher.
  2. Schedule an appointment with the Testing Center. You may contact the Testing Center at 409-933-8676 or

There will be no CLEP testing in January, August or December due to registration.

Important Note to Testers

Although we administer the CLEP tests, College of the Mainland does not accept/award credit for all tests. It is the tester's responsibility to ensure that the school the scores will be sent to awards credit for that particular CLEP test.

Testing Times

View the CLEP Testing Schedule on the right-side column for the complete schedule.

Be sure to register at least a day before the test date.

$25 — Paid at time of registration (all payment types accepted)

CLEP Testing for Veterans

Military veterans can now receive full reimbursement for all CLEP testing fees, thanks to a recently implemented law that enhances veterans' educational benefits. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) will reimburse eligible veterans for the CLEP examination fee and for the test center administration fee.

Fees are waived for veterans taking the test for the first time. Students must wait 180 days to retest and must pay allotted fees.

Retest Policy

The CLEP program has a longstanding policy that exams may not be retaken within a six-month period. If a candidate retakes the examination during this period, the administration is considered invalid, the score is cancelled, and exam fees are forfeited. This waiting period provides students with the opportunity to spend additional time preparing for the exam or the option of taking a classroom course.

CLEP may waive this policy for exams retaken after a three-month period upon special written request from an institution. An academic dean, dean of students or registrar must submit the letter; requests from academic advisors, faculty members or test center administrators will not be accepted. The letter must be on the institution's letterhead and should include the candidate's name and Social Security number, date of birth, the examination title and the date the examination was taken. If the letter is initially submitted by fax, institutions must follow up with the original letter sent via mail immediately. The candidate must also submit a retesting appeal (reason for requesting a retest) in writing which should be forwarded along with the institution's letter. Send appeals to:

P.O. Box 6600
Princeton, NJ 08541-6600

Phone: 800-257-9558
Fax: 609-771-7088

Military service members whose exams are funded by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DSST) may not repeat an examination of the same title within a 180-day period under any circumstance.
