College of the Mainland offers courses for students interested in Health Information Management which include Medical Coding and Medical Transcription. A Health Information Technician, also know as a Registered Health Information Technician (after completion of the national exam), performs a variety of health information-related functions, including organization, analysis, coding and technical evaluation of health information and interaction with administrative and financial departments of health-care facilities. Career opportunities have drastically increased in the last decade. The Department of Labor Statistics cites health information management, as one the 20 fastest growing career fields in the 21st century. Heath Information Technicians works in various settings such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, psychiatric facilities, ambulatory care services, insurance companies, professional billing offices, local, state and federal agencies, contract coding and transcription companies.

COM's HIM program has applied for accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
