How do I apply?
Applicants for the program must meet the requirements for general admission to College of the Mainland and must also meet the other specific requirements that can be found in the College Catalog. Please call the Nursing Office at 409-938-1211, ext 425/426 for additional details.
How long does it take to complete the Vocational Nursing Program?
The Vocational Nursing Program takes 12 months to complete. For example, a student who begins in Spring 2005 will complete the program at the end of the Fall 2005 semester.
Does the Vocational Nursing Program have evening or weekend classes?
The VN program at College of the Mainland is primarily a daytime, Monday-Friday program. Occasionally a student may be enrolled in an evening or weekend clinical course.
Will credits I earned for nursing courses completed at another college or university transfer for credit towards my Vocational Nurse certificate?
Credit for nursing courses completed at another institution are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Credit may be awarded for comparable courses completed elsewhere. Students may request a course evaluation by contacting Dr. Gay Reeves at greeves@com.edu.
Will I be able to continue to work full time while enrolled in the Vocational Nursing Program?
Once accepted into the VN program, students spend approximately 30 hours a week in the classroom or clinical setting. Therefore, students are encouraged to limit their outside employment hours to no more than 24 hours a month.
Can I choose where I do my clinical experience?
College of the Mainland Vocational Nursing Program is required to provide students with diverse and comprehensive clinical experiences. Students rotate through a variety of health care facilities in Galveston and Harris Counties.
Can I attend classes on a part-time basis?
No. The VN Program is a 12-month program of full-time study which includes 560 classroom and 896 laboratory hours. Once students are admitted into the Vocational Nursing Program, they must take the designated courses and progress according to the outlined curriculum.
Can I start my nursing studies at College of the Mainland and later transfer the vocational nursing credits to another vocational nursing program?
Each vocational nursing program has unique curriculum and graduation requirements. Credits earned at College of the Mainland Vocational Nursing Program may or may not be accepted at another institution.
In addition to the cost of tuition and books, are there other expenses?
Nursing students are also responsible for the cost of their uniforms, some health care equipment and miscellaneous fees. The College of the Mainland catalog gives more detailed information on this subject.
Can I use this training to progress to RN?
Yes. The Associate Degree Nursing Program has a LVN Transition Track that allows a qualified LVN to continue their education while working in their chosen profession as an LVN.
Am I a LVN after I graduate from the VN Program?
To be a LVN in the state of Texas you must graduate from an approved Nursing Program and pass the National Council Licensing Examination for Vocational/Practical Nurses.
