How long does it take to complete the associate degree nursing program?
The program can be completed in two years. For example, one can begin the program in Summer School I, 2003 and complete the program at the end of the Spring Semester 2005.
Does the school of nursing have evening or weekend classes?
The ADN program at College of the Mainland is primarily a daytime, Monday-Friday program. Occasionally a student may be enrolled in an evening or weekend theory or clinical course.
Will credits I earned for nursing courses completed at another college or university transfer for credit towards my ADN degree at College of the Mainland?
Credit for nursing courses completed at another institution are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Credit may be awarded for comparable courses completed elsewhere. Student may request a course evaluation by contacting Dr. Gay Reeves at greeves@com.edu.
Will I be able to continue to work full time while enrolled in the ADN program?
Once accepted into the ADN program, students, on average, spend 25 to 30 hours a week in the classroom or clinical setting. Therefore, students are encouraged to limit their outside employment hours to no more than 12 - 24 hours a week.
Can I chose where I do my clinical experience?
College of the Mainland School of Nursing is required to provide students with diverse and comprehensive clinical experiences. Students rotate through a variety of health care facilities in Galveston and Harris Counties.
Can I attend classes on a part-time basis at the School of Nursing?
Prior to acceptance into the nursing program, students may take all of their non-nursing courses and a few nursing courses on a part-time basis. Once students are admitted into the program, they must take the designated courses and progress according to the outlined curriculum. The total number of hours a student will be taking will be dependent upon how many courses the student may have already completed, prior to being admitted into the program.
Can I start my nursing studies at College of the Mainland and later transfer the nursing credits to another School of Nursing?
Each School of Nursing has unique curriculum and graduation requirements. Credits earned at College of the Mainland School of Nursing may or may not be accepted at another institution. Students are encouraged to contact the institution where they want to complete their degree in regards to their credit transfer policy.
In addition to the cost of tuition and books, are there other expenses?
Nursing students are also responsible for the cost of their uniforms, some health care equipment and miscellaneous fees. The College of the Mainland Catalog gives more detailed information on this subject.
I want to be a pediatric nurse, can I get that at College of the Mainland?
College of the Mainland School of Nursing offers an associate degree nursing program which prepares the student to be a nurse generalist. Specialization in a particular area of nursing occurs after licensure in the practice setting or through advanced educational preparation.
I already have a degree in another field of study. Does this other degree count towards my ADN degree?
Courses completed in attaining another degree may fulfill some School of Nursing requirements if these courses are part of the School of Nursing curriculum and if they have been taken within the School of Nursing's prescribed time limitations.
Once I get my ADN degree can I pursue an advanced degree in nursing?
After licensure as an RN, College of the Mainland ADN graduates can articulate to other institutions to pursue baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees.
Am I a RN after I graduate from the ADN program?
To be a registered nurse in the state of Texas you must graduate from an approved School of nursing and pass the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses.
