Rumor:
some employees here at COM received a huge raise? Is that true? Some of these employees really don't do much either... how is that justified? I thought we were on a budget cut status? Makes people wonder how those decisions are made?
Response:
What you are saying is not accurate. What actually occurred was that 27 employees received salary adjustments because of approved reclassifications and restructurings that lead to additional job scope and responsibilities. These employees were entitled to the additional pay based on the additional work and scope of their jobs. Thanks for your inquiry.

Rumor:
new rumors dont get posted because they are not what people want to hear and the school only wants to have positive things said about it... where are all the answers to the other rumors?
Response:
We respond to and print all rumors. The only rumors that don’t get printed are inappropriate ones related to individuals. Accurate negative feedback is used to help make the college, departments, and service better.

Rumor:
The college might be considering closing early on Friday's next year?
Response:
This idea is under consideration as is many other suggestions that have been submitted by administration, staff, and faculty. However no decisions have been made yet. We are still waiting for more definitive information from Austin that will direct us toward the proper remedies for the pending budget cuts. Thanks for your inquiry. Stay tuned.

Rumor:
The reason for the limited choices of classes each semester is due to budget cuts...is this true? I have noticed over the last couple of semesters that there are very few classes to choose from when looking at days and times. (Ex. Business Calculus only offered at one time next semester.) role: student
Response:
No, budget cuts have not impacted our course offerings yet. Some specialized courses, such as the one you mentioned, don't typically have a large number of students enroll and therefore may not be offered each semester so that we avoid having to cancel the class due to low enrollment. We continually strive to improve our planning process in determining optimal times and frequency of our offerings. If you have concerns or questions about when a class will be offered in the future, I would encourage you to contact the Department Chairperson over that discipline area. the hot water has been cut off in the LRC restrooms to save money. role: administration_staff
Response:
This was inspected and we found that we have not turned hot water off for the restrooms that are not under construction. Also, we are scheduled to open the west side restrooms upon our return from the holidays. Rumor:
The Continuing Education Dental Assistant program is inadequate, or more so not efficent enough. I took the course last year spent the last of my earnings for a career choice in the dental field. I am still applying till this day. My question is, do you think some of your CE programs focus more on one than the other, why is it welding, electrical, pipefitter, cosmetology, hav efficient labs to work in to better their hands on experience, but the dental assistant progrom only goes into a Dr. office where you are limited your hands on training because its and actual Dr office, I felt like when I was attending the class that I was gaining the appropriate knowledge that I could utilize in the dental field, but to come to my surprise once i finally found an internship whch was hard to do by the way, my knowledge was as if i came off the street and jus started doing somethng, I didn't fail the course but was an above averge student n my class. But chairside, was a learning experience that I had no knowledge at all of. Now am applying for anything which I could have done and saved my money from the beginning. In this case i felt like as cheap as the course was i still didn't get my moneys worth. What would you recommend I do? role: community
Response:
Thank you for your feedback on our Dental Assistant program. Classroom and lab space is very limited on campus, including at our League City center, and right now it is not feasible to create a dedicated lab for this program like we have for some of our larger programs which have much higher enrollment. Our intention is to expand all of our health sciences programs with the passage of a bond proposal next May; in fact, serving our health sciences students is at the top of our priority list. In the meantime we will work with the instructors in the Dental Assistant program to try to incorporate more hands-on training so that our graduates are prepared and will be successful in their careers. We appreciate you taking the time to give us your perspective on this program and wish you every success as you build your career.

The world will end on December 12, 2012, is this true? And if it is, should I continue with my education or drop out? role: student
Response:
I am not sure how you know that the world will end on December 12, 2012; however, suppose you are wrong? Education is something that you can never get too much of nor can it be taken away from you once you have it. You decide. Thank you, Michael A. Elam, Ed. D. President

The President's Forum for COM staff was recorded. How do staff who were unable to attend get a copy of that recording? Will the Student Forum also be recorded and the recording made available? role: administration_staff
Response:
The student Forum was not recorded; however, those that are interested in hearing the Staff Town Hall Meeting may check with College Media Services to access a copy. Thank you, Michael A. Elam, Ed. D. President

Rumor:
An instructor is consistently showing up to class anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour late. Is this acceptable? role: student
Response:
No, it is not acceptable. Occasionally unforeseeable events may cause someone to be late, but this should not happen repeatedly. Faculty members should respect students' time just as students should respect the time of the instructor and their fellow students. If a student has a concern such as this one he or she has several avenues to pursue. First, they can contact the Student Ombudsperson, Ms. Mara Cooper, whose office is in the Student Center. The student may also want to discuss the matter with the Department Chair responsible for that area of instruction. If uncertain who that is, students can ask for help in the Student Help Center in the Student Center Building. Students also may contact the Vice President of Instruction in the Administration Building for any questions about faculty members or instruction. Thank you, Amy Locklear, Ph.D. Interim VP Instruction
