    Rumor:

Is it true that the library is setting out snacks without regard to the current flu pandemic? role: community

    Response:

First, it is important to understand that there is no conclusive proof that a swine flu pandemic exists. Pandemic simply means that an infection is capable of spreading around the globe, as is almost any type of flu. The real concern would be if there were any reported cases of Swine flu in our service area...there have been none reported to our knowledge. Swine flu alerts are beginning to abate both in Mexico and the U.S. However, it is always best to take precautions when serving food, whether or not a pandemic exists. It is true that we are setting out free snacks for our students. It has become a tradition that at the end of Fall and Spring semesters we offer pizza and goodies to students who are in the library writing papers, studying and preparing for finals. We know the end of the semester is tough for our students and library staff wanted to help out. We started several years ago with library staff contributing from their own money, but now the President and Multicultural team also provide funds for pizza, cookies and chips. We feel it’s a great opportunity to reach out to our students and let them know that we appreciate their hard work. Students have expressed their appreciation to us and one even commented that it made him feel good that we cared enough to help them out. As to food handling, we take normal precautions: always washing our hands before setting out and providing utensils for self service.

I heard that during summers, the snakes from the lake are coming out all around the campus, how true this is? role: student

    Response:

During Spring and Summer, when the weather warms, there have been occasions when snakes have been found. Most are harmless but there have been a few cotton-mouths identified in the area of the lake. People using the track around the lake should be watchful during warm weather and after a heavy rain.

    Rumor:

$2000.00 is missing from the cashier's office and the theft of these state funds WERE NOT reported to the DA. Is it true that money is misssing? Is it true it is $2000.00? Is it true the college did not report this teft to the DA / proper authorties? role: community

    Response:

On February 9, 2009, it was discovered that $2,000 in cash was missing from the daily deposit that was delivered to the College’s depository bank. Immediately the College initiated an investigation with its Police Department, which consists of commissioned peace officers with the state of Texas. In addition, a third party private investigator was engaged to review the events of February 9th. The results of both investigations proved inconclusive, but out of caution, the College reassigned the cashiers that were working at the time of the theft to other areas. Since the investigation the College has implemented additional internal controls and security measures. I would like to correct your assumption that state funds were missing. The College receives both state funds and tax collections by direct deposit. The missing $2,000 was from local tuition revenue. Although the College and the law would not differentiate in the treatment of the theft of any funds, I felt it important to provide the facts of the case. In addition, the College has notified the Galveston County Criminal District Attorney and the Texas City Police Department.

    Rumor:

is it true that safty is not a primary concern with regard to campus lighting. for example, parking lot C and parking lot F have been out since hurricane IKE. role: student

    Response:

The College is very concerned about the safety of our students and staff and we understand your concern about the inadequate lighting in some of our parking lots. After the hurricane the College assessed the repairs that were needed and engaged Crescent Electric to make all lighting repairs. The College has committed over $70,000 for these repairs but the project is not complete. The largest obstacle to completing the project are the large poles that were toppled. Crescent is currently working with a company called "Hurricane Engineer" to develop windstorm specifications for the new poles. When that is complete the poles will be fabricated and installed. The College has replaced all bulbs of existing lights that were not damaged, but some are out again and we are replacing them. Crescent Electric has been working with us but they have not been able to devote all of their time to the College because they are working on all the County lighting projects from the hurricane. I know that this is not satisfactory but it may help you understand the issues we are dealing with. Thank you for taking the time to express your concerns.

Mr. C's has not passed it's last two health inspections. Is this true? role: student

    Response:

The COM food service facility has passed all inspections since it has been operated at COM by Mr. Carrasco. The most recent score was 10 point deduction out of 100 points. This score was readily corrected but our Inspector did not change the scoring. We have had in the past a lower grade but that has been mainly for structural things that we have had corrected or have scheduled for correction. We take personal pride in maintaining a clean and healthy environment for our customers and staff. Mr. Carrasco wants to represent COM in a positive manner in everything they do. By the way, their February score was minus 6 points and their worst score ever was a minus 17 points.

I heard that the electronic sign off Palmer has been broken for several years now and there is no intention of fixing it. It now looks even worse since hurricane Ike. Shouldn't it be fixed or removed? role: community

    Response:

College of the Mainland does plan to replace the electronic sign which suffered physical damages during Hurricane Ike. When the sign is replaced, the technology will be updated. At the last Board of Trustees meeting, the sign was included in the list of projects to be addressed over the next several months. Currently the college is reviewing designs and awaiting resolution of a number of damage issues related to the hurricane.

Students w/ a GPA below 2.5 or 2.0 will not be able to attend Spring semester? Something like that. role: student

    Response:

Although there are guidelines regarding satisfactory academic progress, they do not involve suspension if a GPA falls below 2.5 or 2.0. These guidelines may be found on page 46 of the current COM catalog. It is suggested that students consult with their advisor if their academic progress is not meeting the standards listed in these guidelines. There are also guidelines and regulations which affect student financial aid and these rules are similar to the academic progress regulations. Financial assistance could be restricted even though a student is eligible to register for classes. Financial Aid information may be found on page 31 of the catalog. How do I register for this 'Weekend College'? It would be wonderful for me, since I could keep my job (not easy to do these days) and still get an education. role: community

    Response:

Although we have some weekend courses available, a full-blown Weekend College has yet to be organized. That will be up to the new COM President when he/she comes on board. To register for the available courses, either visit our registrar counter or register online, if applicable. James R. Templer, Ph.D. Vice President for Instruction

that silly answer is the reason I have dropped my classes. I also have CHILDREN to raise and a job so the unexpected extra week caused me too many problems to overcome. Any more stupid answers??? ROLE = student

    Response:

The College must fulfill its obligation to almost 4,000 students to create a quality learning environment while operating within the requirements imposed by Texas law and the standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, our accrediting body. We cannot control the timing of hurricanes, and we cannot arrange our calendar or offer classes to meet the time preferences for every student, although we seek to accommodate as many as we can. All of us would be happier if Hurricane Ike had not arrived to disrupt normal activities and operations and to destroy lives and property.
