    Rumor:

The Colleges new sign will have BP's company logo on it? If this is true have you thought about public image and the Bond? BP = Big Problem. role: community

    Response:

The sign out front will have College of the Mainland on it. We have asked several companies to donate funds to help us replace that defective eye sore; however, we have been turned down by all of them. We created designs with each of their logos on our sign in exchange for their support. None of the companies we asked have decided to help us, so we will do it our selves, first with a temporary sign. After a successful bond issue we will be able to replace all of our campus and directional signs permenately. If a company is willing to donate the money to replace that electronic sign their logo will appear on the sign. Dr. Elam

BP is a major partner however, our program serves the entire petrochemical community so we will not have to cancel our Process Technology Program. Dr. Elam

    Rumor:

I heard that COM is getting rid of the paper form of the course selection schedules and only offering them online through Web Advisor. Is that true? role: student

    Response:

It is true that only a very limited supply of hard-copy schedules are being printed. Although printed copies of the schedule are costly, this is not the main reason for going to the on-line version of the schedules. Classes are constantly being added or in some cases cancelled. The schedule is a work in progress that is responsive to the needs of our students and changes usually daily. The schedule will be available in PDF format and can be printed but be aware of the changes that can occur. Bill Spillar, Ed.D. Interim Vice President for Student Services

    Rumor:

the Instructor of the year aware is being manipulated by the administration. It is strange that 4 of the 5 finalists are the same as last years. Now what are the odds of that happening? Please explain. role: faculty

    Response:

Those were the individuals chosen by the students. And as Ripley says "Believe it or not." Thank you, Michael A. Elam, Ed. D. President

    Rumor:

Why is it that we college graduates have to have a combined graduation with the ged people? role: student

    Response:

The College Board of Trustees decided to cut taxes for residents this year by not accepting the effective tax rate. This decision reduced the college's revenue budget by almost $2 million dollars. In order to balance the budget for next year the college must cut expenses by the same amount. We are doing everything that we can to cut expenses including combining graduations. This is not a new concept for COM. We have done this before. Many universities do the same thing to help manage costs and maximize personnel effort. It is important for me to do everything that I can to keep our college running efficiently and to keep all of our employees working. We will do everything that we can to ensure that the ceremony is memorable for all. President Elam

    Rumor:

Is it true that adminstration is taking over the decision of who get the Teacher of the year award instead of the students? I heard that they (higher ups) did not like the top five finalist and are now taking the decision away from the students and giving it to someone who is a favorable candidate for the upcoming bond issue. role: student

    Response:

No it is not true. What I would like to have is a joint process that includes both students and employees. Dr. Elam, President

Dr. Dikocha has been fired. Why? role:Student

    Response:

Dear Student: Dr. Dikocha was not fired. Dr. Dikocha was an excellent instructor who resigned to take another teaching position at another college. This often happens when people perform their duties at a high level. We wish Dr. Dikocha great success. President Elam, Ed. D.

    Rumor:

This is not a rumor, but how do we get the lights around the Administration Building turned on at night? The sidewalk between the Admin Bldg and the Student Center heading towards the parking lot is very dark. Ponding of water is very difficult to see at night; and, there are areas where a concrete section has subsided, making very easy to trip over. role: faculty

    Response:

We have had a failure of the underground electrical circuits for these lights. Purchase Orders are however approved to make the repairs. But, because considerable machine digging is involved, and the ground is still wet and the weather still has rain in the forecast, we are waiting until the week of Feb 8 to begin repairs. Sidewalk repairs are a separate project, which we are trying to schedule for the summer months.
