    Rumor:

Pell Grant refunds are being held longer and the college is lowering the amount of the refunds.

    Response:

No, refunds are not being held longer nor is the college lowering the amounts of the refunds.  The amount of the Federal Pell Grant award is mandated by the United States Department of Education based on a student’s Expected Family Contribution, the Cost of Attendance for the student, and the number of credit hours the student is taking.  Both the refund timeframe and refund amounts are set by the government, not by the College.  The mandated refund timeframe is 14 calendar days from the census date for each enrollment period (16-week, 12-week, first 8-week, 2nd8-week, etc.).  The census dates are posted on the on-line Academic Calendar which can be accessed on the COM webpage.

    Rumor:

The elevator for LRC is broken more often than not. Is it ever going to be fixed? I saw a student going down the stairs the other day in a cast. We have disabled students and faculty who need to access the upper floors of the building, and fall classes begin at the same time as the library opens, so even if a student knows to request the library elevator, he or she would be late to class. role: faculty

    Response:

Aging equipment  is the main reason for poor serviceability, but  our maintenance company, Thyssenkrupp Elevator Corp.,  has been very responsive  to service calls, and makes every attempt to quickly make repairs and place the elevator back in service.

The College  identified the “modernization”  of the elevator as a priority for Fiscal Year 2013, and the  Board of Trustees will be considering a strategy for funding the project.  Once approval is granted, we will initiate work.    It is important to recognize that once work begins, only the Library elevator will be available for use, unfortunately.  Modernization duration will be approximately two months.

    Rumor:

: I hear we will be earning less leave time beginning this next year? It would help people plan their leave usage if we know this is coming up. role: administration_staff

    Response:

Current COM employees will continue to earn vacation leave at the same rate as do presently.  New employees hired after July 1, do accrue vacation leave at a lower rate.

    Rumor:

rumor: Is College of the Mainland spraying for the mosquito problem that is affecting everyone on campus? I have classes 5 days a week in the Technical Vocational Building, and my classroom is over run with mosquitos. My class alone kills about ten mosquitos everyday between 8:30 and 10:55am inside our classroom, not to mention the multitude of mosquitos by all of the outer doors of the building. It would be awesome if the college would try to resolve this issue. role: student

    Response:

The application of pesticides is regulated by the State of Texas, and “pesticide law” is very restrictive, including  OSHA reporting compliance if  employee illness or  injury occurs.  To reduce the College’s risk (and cost), we rely on the  “Galveston County  Mosquito Control” for mosquito pesticide treatments.   According to Mosquito Control, the current mosquito hatch has been caused by high tides and recent rain, and  West Texas  City  including the COM campus was included in last night’s spraying  schedule.  We hope that will reduce and gradually eliminate the problem.  rIf you want to keep track of their schedule, or other information about this County Department their website is:  www.co.galveston.tx.us/mosquito_control.

    Rumor:

I heard a rumor that COM is at risk of losing major funding and/or accreditation. How true are either of these? role: student

    Response:

College of the Mainland is undergoing the normal processes that all colleges accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools must routinely do in order to have SACS accreditation reaffirmed.  It is an intensive review of all we do as an academic institution and involves much work by staff and faculty over many months.  Our written report for SACS will be submitted by next week, and a campus visit by a SACS team will take place during the fall semester.  We expect to be reaffirmed.

Funding from the State of Texas for all community colleges is based on a formula that allocates funds based upon student contact hours at each college, primarily.  The legislature has been reducing the amount of funding per contact hour over the past several years, which is reducing the funding for all community colleges.  Funding for state universities has also been declining.  Because of this situation, COM and other colleges are seeking to be more efficient and effective in order to control expenses and to avoid big increases in tuition and fees as a way of replacing the lost state funding.

    Response:

The college entrance is a concrete drive and in excellent repair.  No potholes exist.  However, the south half of  Parking Lot D, an asphalt-surfaced lot,  is scheduled for repair while the College is closed over the winter break.  Work is estimated to be complete by the end of March, 2012.
