International Education Week at COM

College of the Mainland celebrates International Education Week November 16-20 with a visit from a Fulbright Scholar, highlights from last summer's study abroad program and the experiences of a Peace Corps volunteer.

"We celebrate International Education Week in order to underscore that COM recognizes the importance of preparing our students to be successful in an international economy," says Dr. Dotti L. Jones, director of international education. "We also invite the community to join us as all our activities are free and open to the public."

On Tuesday, November 17 at 11 a.m. in the Teaching Auditorium (L-131), Dr. Jawed Zouari, a Fulbright Scholar who teaches political science and history at Seattle Central Community College will speak about the unique experience of world cultures. Following his presentation, Tiffany Etzel who studied world literature last summer as part of COM's study abroad experience in Greece and Rome will discuss highlights of her trip. There will then be a student international luncheon at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center, and everyone is invited and encouraged to bring a dish that is typical of their culture.

Professor Zouari will speak to students at 3 p.m. in the Teaching Auditorium about the nuts and bolts of applying for a Fulbright Scholarship.

The Joys of a Peace Corps volunteer is the topic of discussion on Thursday, November 19 at 11 a.m. in the Teaching Auditorium. A former Peace Corps volunteer will discuss the challenges and joys of serving in the Peace Corps after the age of 50. Following the talk, there will be a reception in the COM Library with foods from around the world.

All International Week activities are free and open to the public.
