COM Concert Band will hold free concert Nov. 20
The College of the Mainland Concert Band will hold a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, in the Fine Arts Building Theatre on campus.
Director Sparky Koerner said compositions will include Young Person’s Guide to John Williams with selections from movies, “Prologue from Hook,” “Hedwig’s Theme,” “Theme from E.T.” and “Raiders March.”
Leroy Anderson’s “Blue Tango” will make you want to get up and tango around the room, he said. An original from Michael Sweeney, “Lincoln Legacy,” has some familiar melodies such as When Johnny Comes Marching Home.” The percussion section will be highlighted in “Angelic Festival” by Richard Saucedo.
The Concert Band is a mixture of students and adults from the community, Koerner said. Many are “come-back players,” he said, who put their musical instrument away when they got out of high school or college and now want to put music back into their lives.
“Music is something that you can do for life,” Koerner said. He encouraged anyone who still has that clarinet or trumpet or any other instrument sitting in the closet to get it out and join the group next semester. Private lessons are available through the college.
Anyone interested in joining the Concert Band can contact Sparky Koerner at firstname.lastname@example.org or 409-933-8347.
The concert is open to the public.
