Safety training honors Workers Memorial Day

Posted on: April 23, 2014

The Gulf Coast Safety Institute will host a weeklong series of safety training in honor of Worker’s Memorial Day. The classes will be offered Monday, April 28, through Friday, May 2.

Workers Memorial Day, observed every year on April 28, is a time to honor those workers who have died on the job, to acknowledge the grievous suffering experienced by families and communities and to recommit to the fight for safe and healthful workplaces for all workers. It is also the day that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was established in 1971.

“Each year too many people die on the job,” said Cindy Lewis, director of the Gulf Coast Safety Institute.  “One of the ways in which we can change this is to provide training in the areas where we see people getting severely hurt or killed. The training classes that we are hosting this year should provide employers and workers with knowledge of how to protect themselves and their fellow employees.”

This year the institute has partnered with the OSHA Training Institute Education Center at the University of Texas-Arlington to hold safety and health training at the Gulf Coast Safety Institute, located at 320 Delany Rd. in La Marque. The institute will offer the following training.

Monday, April 28 – OSHA 7115 Lockout/Tagout (7.5 hrs)
Tuesday, April 29 – OSHA 7405 Fall Hazard Awareness in Construction (7.5 hrs)
Wednesday, April 30 – OSHA 7400 Noise in Construction (7.5 hrs)
Thursday, May 1 – OSHA 7410 Managing Excavation Hazards (7.5 hrs)
Friday, May 2 – OSHA 7505 Intro to Accident Investigation (7.5 hrs)

The lockout/tagout course will be offered at no charge on Monday, April 28. The remainder of the classes Tuesday to Friday cost $195 each, though those who register for two classes will receive a third free.

For more information or to register, contact the Education Center at UT-Arlington at 866-906-9190. Seating is limited to 40 people per class, so please register early. Walk-ins will not be accepted for these courses.
