COM music scholarships now open

Note by note, a solid musical education lays a foundation for a future entertainer or instructor. College of the Mainland is offering educational scholarships for music students who want to hone their skills and perform an instrument in one of the college’s talented ensembles.
Those who play an instrument, particularly the trumpet, clarinet, French horn, trombone, flute, saxophone, tuba or percussion, are invited to schedule an audition Aug. 12-14 at COM. The auditioning musician should bring a prepared piece of music to perform, such as a past competition piece or part of a solo. The musician will be asked to play scales and sight-read a piece of music.
If awarded a scholarship, students will play in one of COM’s music ensembles and be required to enroll in private instruction, music theory, sight singing and ear training.
The COM music program strengthens the skills of those who pursue music for their own enjoyment and those who plan to earn an associate degree in music and continue their studies at a university. Its many talented students after graduation have often pursued further education at state, national and international universities or become professional musicians.
“COM music classes are transferable and prepare students for universities,” said professor Sparky Koerner, chairman of the COM Fine Arts Department. “We have former students right now who are at Stephen F. Austin State University, University of Houston, Sam Houston State University and University of Texas studying music.”
COM music student Travis Minter has already begun teaching what he’s learned at COM to others. He now has a position giving guitar lessons at a music studio, for which one of his COM professors recommended him.
“I get a lot of individual attention from all of my professors. Right away I’m able to put some of the work I’ve done (at COM) into action,” Minter said.
