Texas Workforce Commission presents grant to COM

The Texas Workforce Commission has given a $374,494 Skills Development Fund grant to fund a College of the Mainland partnership with Marathon Petroleum Corp. and Marathon Pipe Line LLC. The grant will be used to create 26 new jobs and custom-train 291 incumbent workers.

“We are so proud of our partnerships and the support,” said Dr. Beth Lewis, COM president.
The grant will fund training on upgraded technology, new OSHA laws and regulations and multiple expanding roles for process operators, stillmen and electrical and instrumentation technicians.
“There’s a need for employees to have a higher skill set than they’ve had in the past,” said Danny Bacot, associate director of contract training. “The ultimate outcome is well-trained employees in our community and helping the companies with their training needs that they’ve identified over the past year.”
State Sen. Larry Taylor attended the presentation.
“We have a lot of companies moving here and expanding. Our big challenge now is making sure we have the trained and skilled workforce to do that. We are preparing for our future,” said Taylor.

TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar presented the check to Lewis and representatives from the partnering companies.  

“Our institutions need to keep pace with change, which is what our partnerships with community colleges do very well,” said Alcantar.
