Day of the Dead art contest honors legacies
Posted on: October 17, 2012
COM students are sponsoring a Dia de los Muertos art contest to allow individuals of any cultural background to honor their ancestors. Submissions of artwork, photography, shrines, poetry or even music will be accepted from Oct. 29 to Oct. 31.
All submissions will be displayed, and the winning three will receive $50 or $25 prizes. Students in the Amigos and Dream Act Leadership Organization Clubs will judge the contest.
Participants are encouraged to take inspiration from traditional Dia de los Muertos altar art and to innovate new forms.
“The riskier, the better,” said Dalel Serda, COM faculty member and co-sponsor of the Amigos Student Club. “We’re interested in the potential of varied forms of honoring our ancestors.”
Students are also co-hosting a Day of the Dead celebration, which is free and open to the public, on Nov. 1 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the COM Library. Students and faculty will share about their ancestors’ legacies and about the holiday. Traditional snacks will be served.
For more information about the contest or to submit a piece, contact Dalel Serda at email@example.com or 409-933-8497.
