Jazz concert features swinging tunes

The award-winning College of the Mainland Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo will perform a concert featuring popular big band, swing and Latin jazz selections on Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall. The concert will feature classics such as Count Basie’s “This Way” and “In A Mellow Tone,” originally performed by Duke Ellington’s orchestra, as well as more modern pieces. The classic “My Funny Valentine” will feature a solo saxophone performance by Charles Delgado.
The concert will raise funds to help send the COM Jazz Ensemble to the Jazz Education Network Conference in Atlanta, Ga., for which they were chosen to perform. A 27-member committee reviews audition tapes and grants the honor of performing at the international conference to a select number of community colleges and universities each year. This is the second time that the Jazz Ensemble has been chosen to perform at the conference.
“It’s quite an honor to be selected to perform there,” said Sparky Koerner, Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo director.
There is no admission fee for the concert, but donations will be accepted. For information, call Sparky Koerner at 409-933-8347.
