College of the Mainland cosmetology student, Tammy Sybert, of Texas City, recently placed second in a cut-and-color contest through the CHI Environmental School Program and Houston-based Farouk Systems, Inc. After giving fellow student Dawne Bolen a new look, she was awarded a CHI flat iron and blow dryer valued at more than $200.

“The students have become more motivated to enter competitions and try different hairstyles after seeing a fellow student do so well in a competition,” said Ellen Chicon, cosmetology instructor.

For the cut and color competition, Sybert took "before" pictures of Bolen and then cut, colored and styled her hair, and did her makeup.

“I was happy to be Tammy’s model and she did a great job on my hair,” said Bolen.

Sybert will complete the cosmetology program in December.

“In a year you can earn a degree and take it in any direction you want, from owner to manicurists. This is an awesome program,” said Sybert.

After she earns her certification, Sybert plans to work at a local salon and hopes to become a stylist in the fashion industry.

COM Cosmetology is a nine-month program. Students gain more than 1,500 hours of hands-on training and classroom instruction to get their certification.
