DIVERSITY COUNCIL
Revised June 2006

This Strategic Diversity Plan calls for the creation of a Diversity Council. A Diversity Council is an internal organizational structure whose purpose is to support and direct an organization's diversity initiative. The College's Diversity Council will play a critical role in the processes of bridge building, data collection, education and training throughout the College. Because College of the Mainland currently supports a team based managerial structure, this proposal falls right in line with the College's already existing organizational alignment and would further serve to promote partnerships between teams during the implementation stage of the College's diversity initiative.

As a Continuance Improvement Team, The Diversity Council will be subject to the College's Team Policy and must remain in compliance with all provisions set forth in the Policy at all times. It will include representation from all constituents directly involved in the process. The Diversity Council will create a team agreement that connects with the College's vision and mission and will follow team rules for decision making, as well as annually evaluate its own success or failures.

The following existing Teams have been identified and are proposed to provide representation on the Diversity Council:

  • The Presidents Team will be responsible for the development and implementation of a hiring and retention plan for minority Faculty and Administrators.
    Contact: Lonica Bush
  • Multi-Cultural Team will serve as an example of cultural and ethnic diversity and foster awareness and appreciation for diversity.
    Contact: Diane Duron
  • Strategic Enrollment Management Team will create and support mentorship programs for minority students and contribute to the College's learning environment so as to increase student success.
    Contact: Ciro Reyes
  • Institutional Research Team will serve as a support team but will not be an actual member of the diversity council and will administer diversity competency and satisfaction surveys and provide statistical data as required.
    Contact: Anita Garcia
  • Office of Student Life will encourage and support mentorship programs for minority students and contribute to the College's learning environment so as to increase student success.
    Contact: Mara Smith
  • Continuing Education & Community Service Team will provide diversity sensitivity training and promote cultural competencies.

    Contact: Jim Higgins
  • Instructional Administration Team will encourage and support minority faculty orientation and retention by developing a mentorship program for new faculty to assist in their acclamation and adjustment to the campus and the community. This team will also examine course offerings and curriculum design to reflect the pluralism of our society.
    Contact: Drew Nelson
  • Facilities Services Team will coordinate the use and function of campus facilities to accommodate the implementation of diversity sensitivity and cultural competency training.
    Contact: Beverly Mitchell
  • Student Support Services will provide resources for historically underrepresented students to increase retention and attainment rates.

It is proposed that this Team Charter be approved for a minimum of three (3) years at which time the President and the Board of Trustees and will evaluate the effectiveness of the Diversity Council and make whatever changes necessary to achieve the College's diversity goals.
