Diversity Council

2008-2012 Diversity Council Member Departments:

  • Office of Diversity & Equity will be responsible for the development and implementation of a hiring and retention plan for minority Faculty, Staff and Administrators as well annually developing an affirmative action plan.
  • Multi-Cultural Team will continue to serve as an example of cultural and ethnic diversity and foster awareness and appreciation for diversity.
  • Enrollment Management Department will utilize community outreach programs to facilitate recruitment and retention of historically underrepresented students.
  • Institutional Research Department will be responsible for conducting audits and surveys of campus climate for diversity and provide support to the Office of Diversity & Equity in the preparation and development of an annual affirmative action plan.
  • Office of Student Life will emphasize the value and appreciation of diversity during student orientation and encourage and support mentorship programs for minority students via student clubs and organizations, and contribute to the College's learning environment so as to increase student success.
  • Continuing Education & Community Service Department will work together with the Professional Development Academy to provide diversity sensitivity training and promote cultural competencies. In addition, CE will direct and support international educational opportunities for foreign students studying at COM and COM students studying abroad.
  • Professional Development Academy will partner with Continuing Education and other Departments to provide professional develop relating to diversity sensitivity and cross-cultural competency.
  • Marketing & Communications Department will continue to develop and implement a communication plan for the diversity initiative and provide public relations to the general public.
  • Faculty Liaison will serve as a link between the Council and the faculty and lead the development of a mentorship program for new faculty to assist in their acclimation and adjustment to the campus and community. This individual will also work with faculty to examine course offerings and curriculum design to ensure that these materials reflect the pluralism of our society.
  • Facilities Services Department will coordinate the use and function of campus facilities to accommodate the implementation of diversity sensitivity and cultural competency training, as well as multi-cultural educational programs and events.
  • Student Support Services Department will provide resources for historically underrepresented students to increase retention and attainment rates.
  • Admissions Department will work together with the Financial Aid Department to provide educational materials, resources, and support to historically underrepresented students, including undocumented students to increase enrollment of minority students.
  • Financial Aid Department will work together with the Admissions Department to provide financial aid resources and assistance to historically underrepresented students, including undocumented students to increase enrollment, retention, and completion rates of minority students.

This structure will ensure that the college's efforts to create a multicultural organization will be institutionalized.
