Associate of Applied Science – Health Information Management

College of the Mainland offers courses for students interested in health information management, which includes medical coding. A health information technician performs a variety of health care functions, including but not limited to organization, analysis, coding and technical evaluation of health information and interacting with administrative and financial departments of health care settings. COM’s Health Information Management Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. The program also has a graduate satisfaction rate of 100 percent.

Furthermore, students who successfully complete the program are eligible to sit for the American Health Information Management Associations National examination to become a registered health information technician.

Students taking the AAS or Medical Coding Certificate are required to meet or obtain the following:

  • Criminal background check
  • Current immunizations such as tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, TB skin test and chicken pox

Students may also be required to:

  • Show proof of completion of hepatitis B vaccine series
  • Undergo drug screening
  • Purchase hospital scrubs and student identification badge
