Big Changes in Government Courses Sequence
The state of Texas is mandating some changes to the government course requirements at public institutions of higher education. Beginning in the Fall of 2013, GOVT 2301 and GOVT 2302 will no longer be offered. Instead, students will be required to take GOVT 2305 and GOVT 2306. The completion of either sequence of courses (GOVT 2301 and 2302 OR GOVT 2305 and 2306) will fulfill the core curriculum requirement. See an academic advisor for more details.
COM’s exceptional degree and certificate programs produce graduates who are well qualified for their fields. Several of COM's technical programs boast a 100 percent student pass rate on state board examinations. Currently, COM offers degrees that prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities as well as degrees and certificates that provide students with workforce skills and prepare them for employment.
Transfer Program Degrees
The degrees that transfer to four-year colleges and universities are the “Field of Study” associate degrees, the Associate of Arts, the Associate of Arts in Teaching and the Associate of Science. Degrees with emphases are guidelines to a four-year degree. In order to count toward an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts in Teaching or Associate of Science at College of the Mainland, courses must be academic transfer courses (listed as ACGM in the College Catalog).
Workforce Programs
Workforce education degrees are designed for employment preparation and job skills enhancement and upgrading. The AAS is not a transfer degree, but some of the courses required for the AAS may transfer.

The following degrees and certificates can be obtained completely online through COM's distance education.
- Criminal Justice - Associate of Arts
- General Studies - Associate of Arts
- Administrative Support - Certificate
- Small Business Operations - Certificate
- Core Curriculum - general education courses required for all baccalaureate degrees in Texas
