I am relieved to be in two online classes this semester because it allows me to save on transportation costs, especially with the rise of fuel prices these days. I am thankful to College of the Mainland for offering these alternatives to their students.

I prefer online classes for two reasons. The first is I work full time and I am a wife and a mother of three. I can take more classes at a time if I can do the majority of the work at home. The second reason is that I have a moderate hearing impairment. A classroom has more busy noise than I have at home. If the instructor has her back to me or if she speaks softly I miss much of what has been said. Working online I control the volume for the online modules and can re-listen to them or can use text captions when available.

I have always favored face-to-face classes, but my views have changed over the past three years. I now prefer online courses because I am an older student with a family and a job. I work in Houston so it is hard for me to be on time for my classes and Internet courses allow me to work at my own pace. The Internet is definitely the face of the future and it is routine now for us to check our e-mails every day. If I have questions, I am able to send an e-mail to my professor and not worry about a late response because we all check our e-mails daily sometimes two or three times a day. Internet courses also eliminate competition in the classroom, allowing for shy or less educated students to feel comfortable about attending class (online class!)

I prefer taking distance ed. classes rather than face to face, because this way I can work around my job hours and be able to get my degree. I am a senior at U of H main campus finishing my degree in History / English Lit. I work full-time and take care of my mom who is sick, so by taking classes online or through distance ed, I am able to go to school full-time.
