Early Warning Retention Program

The Early Warning Retention Program is designed to increase retention, improve the success rate of our students in the classroom and promote positive student development. The program seeks to provide information about campus resources and to help students reach their academic goals and explore their career options.

Instructors are encouraged to use the referral program throughout the semester; however, remember that the first part of the semester is the most crucial. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact the following advisors:

Who should be referred to the Early Warning Retention Program?

Students with:

  • Poor attendance and/or consistent tardiness
  • Low participation/motivation
  • Poor quality of work
  • Late and/or missing assignments
  • Low exam/quiz grades
  • A need to address study skills or time management
  • Academic difficulty due to personal issues outside of the classroom

Dual credit and Collegiate High School students have another referral program that is similar to the Early Warning Initiative, so they do not need to be included in this.

How do I refer someone to the Early Warning Retention Program?

It is done electronically through your class rosters in WebAdvisor:

  1. There is an option on the roster to check a box after the student’s name.
  2. Click on “Submit” at the bottom of the roster after selecting the student you wish to refer.
  3. You will be redirected to complete an Early Intervention Form for that student.
  4. Fill out the Early Intervention Form, and click on “Submit” at the bottom of the form.
  5. If you are referring multiple students, you will need to go back to the class roster and start over with number 1 for the next student.

What happens after I refer a student?

You (the professor) will be emailed a “thank you for your referral” message when we have received it. An advisor or counselor will email and call the student, and we will assess what the appropriate next step for each student.

Will I receive any additional information from the Student Success Center regarding the student I referred?

The personal information that students share with Student Success Center staff is confidential, and students may or may not choose to share with their professors. We do encourage students to maintain open lines of communication with instructors. The student whom you referred will need your signature either on a card or a checklist that will be turned in to an assigned advisor. This confirms for us that the student has made contact with you to discuss any issues.
