Message from the Senior Coordinator
Last year proved to be a testimony that our program is important to you. Our classes and trips have been very successful.
I wanted to welcome back Joan Self, who works in our office. She has recovered from a broken foot and is back in full force after two surgeries. During her absence, Marilyn Vodovar and Charlotte Walker worked tirelessly to accomplish our tasks. They also worked in extreme circumstances when our building was broken into two times during the summer. If you hear a beeping sound as you enter, you will realize that we now have an alarm system.
What would we do without our volunteers who put together the COMPASS schedule? The group, headed by Charlotte Walker, included Jean Bump, Carmelita Yeager, Marge Dale, Alba Collins and Lennie Snow. Thanks to all of you! Sid Hooper also continues to volunteer in our office on a regular basis.
Our Senior Advisory Council did a spectacular job in assisting our seniors at the Luncheon Card Party held at Village on the Park. Thanks to the Advisory Council members and the seniors who attended the function. Twenty-five nice door prizes were given away but the real winner was Janice Steele who won the 50/50 cash drawing. It was a lot of fun.
Village on the Park will also be a new site in Friendswood for two classes to be offered to the community through our program. Look for Brazilian embroidery (taught by Charlotte Walker) and Line Dancing (taught by Jackie Arbegust). Both classes are free but you must have a current senior ID card and register for the class you wish to attend.
The raffles were complete with the winners, Joan Self and Sheila Buckley, of the hammocks (donated and made by Herman Auer). The winner of the Christmas tree with the ornaments (made by our gourd class taught by Gloria Conz) was Charlotte Walker.
Thanks to our sponsor (Select Care Texan Plus) for the wonderful Ice Cream Social that was held on August 24. We also were awed by Sallie Anderson's artwork and publications and by Jan Johnson who signed personal copies of her book "Walking Historic Galveston."
When you review our schedule, don't forget to mark your calendars for the things that interest you in the section "Things to Do in Your Own Backyard." We need donations for our garage sale scheduled for April 10.
Spring into action and take advantage of all the things our college and senior adult program have to offer. We are open to all your ideas and suggestions. Just call me.
Sincerely,
Eva R. Neinas, Coordinator
