Student clubs and organizations are a critical component of the learning environment in that students gain skills and experiences that will help them in their careers. Students are highly encouraged to participate in one or more of the following clubs and organizations. The Billiard Club

Sponsor: Leroy August, ext. 287

The Billiards Club teaches the community the basics of pool, to promote teamwork and cooperation between diverse groups and provide a constructive leisure activity that simultaneously teaches critical thinking with having fun. Pool is a game of strategy and teaches people how to shoot and learn concepts of geometry at the same time. Beginners and students experienced at billiards are encouraged to participate.

Biology Club

Sponsors: Marilynn Kish-Molina, ext. 328, and Tracy Orr, ext. 575

Increase knowledge of biological sciences through presentations, guest speakers and field trips. Participation in community services projects including beach clean-ups.

Child Development Club

Sponsor: Susan Napoli, ext. 462

The Child Development Club encourages child development awareness throughout the community. The club promotes child development as a career choice.

The purpose of this organization is to bring together people who are interested in pottery and sculpture. The club is open to all COM students and meets monthly to plan workshops, lectures, discussions and field trips. Faculty, staff and members of the community are invited to special programs sponsored by the club.

COM Amigos

Sponsor: Dianne Faust, ext. 464

The friendliest club on campus! COM Amigos is a student organization open to students of all races or ethnicity who wish to promote and reflect the many aspects of the Hispanic culture. COM Amigos creates activities surrounding Hispanic Heritage Month, and plays an active part in Cinco de Mayo festivities. Club goals are to: (1) promote awareness and educate the community on the richness and diversity of the Hispanic culture, (2) work with other student organizations to encourage access to educational opportunities by the Hispanic community, as well as other under-represented groups, and (3) disseminate information concerning educational conferences, workshops, and scholarships available to Hispanic students.

COM Men & Women Soccer Clubs

The soccer clubs provide a recreational outlet for students who play soccer. The clubs hold regular practices and compete in a local soccer league.

COM Outdoor Club

Sponsor: Maryann Urick, ext. 418

COM's Outdoor Club strives to bring together people who have a common interest in the outdoors. Weekend outdoor trips, camping, canoeing, backpacking, climbing or caving are scheduled once each month. Anyone 18 years or older may participate. Credit students only pay half price for trips! The club meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 PM in SC120.

COM Vocal Senate

The purpose of the COM Vocal Senate is to promote and develop activities for vocal students to enhance music education, to raise funds for scholarships and activities, and to support the College and the community in service and vocal performance.

Criminal Justice Organization

Sponsor: Carla Anderson: ext. 276

The Criminal Justice Organization exists to educate COM students and the community about the fundamentals of Criminal Justice. The club is open to those who take interest in the criminal justice field and want to become aware of related occupational career fields and degree opportunities.

Costmetology Club

Sponsor: Mary Gonzales, ext. 236

The Cosmetology Club is ideal for students who are outgoing and creative. The club encourages leadership and unity, and values students having fun and building relationships as they help people in the community. Fundraisers are fun activities that also provide Cosmetology students with additional funds for projects. Funds are used to help graduating students financially when attending State Board Exams in Austin. Students benefit from hair shows and attend educational field trips.

Geology Club

The Geology Club brings together students interested in the outdoors, nature and the environment. Educaitonal field trips are taken every semester to caves, dinosaur tracks and natural areas around Texas. The club also conducts recycling projects and participates in beach cleanups. All students are welcome to participate.

Graphic Arts Club

Sponsors: Freda O'Connor, ext. 254, and Coleena Jackson, ext. 535

The purpose of the Graphic Arts Club is to promote interest among students and within the community about the many aspects of the Graphic Arts industry through club activities, field trips and guest lectures.

Instrumental Musicians Guild

Sponsor: Sparky Koerner, ext. 347

The I.M.G. brings together student instrumental musicians to share information about their instruments, performance literature, job availability, workshops, and concert dates. The Guild also encourages students to form performing ensembles, and provides clinics and performances by professional musicians.

International Student Organization

Sponsor: Rafael Naranjo, ext. 353

A cross-cultural exchange among individuals is one of the greatest educational benefits of an international campus. The International Club promotes international consciousness at COM by bringing diverse nationalities into closer contact to nurture understanding and encourage the educational development of human beings.

Mainland NAACP College Chapter

Sponsor: Jeanette Slaughter, ext. 422

The Mainland NAACP College Chapter is engaged in social justice advocacy, addressing issues such as voter empowerment, economic development, criminal justice, healthcare and educational excellence. The NAACP is dedicated to developing leadership and political activism among college students through training, mobilization, education and organization.

Organization of African American Culture (OAAC)

Sponsor: Beverly Mitchell, ext. 528

OAAC members are geared towards enhancing multiculturalism, enriching campus life, and informing the population about African American Culture. The club is a minority-based organization with an interest in increasing social awareness of issues and affairs addressing society. The club provides assistance in the community and participates in a variety of youth functions.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)

Sponsor: Leslie Richardson, ext. 329, and ND Dikeocha, ext. 502

PTK is an honors organization that enables active members to apply for PTK scholarships at fouryear colleges. To be a member, students must have achieved a level of academic standards set forth by the national organization. The activities of PTK focus on the development of leadership, scholarship, fellowship and community service. To be eligible for membership, a student must have a GPA of at least 3.6 with at least 12 credit hours. Once a member, a student must maintain a GPA of 3.0.

Photo Club

Sponsor: Mona Marshall, ext. 424

The Photo Club provides its members with the material, intellectual resources, dialogue and sense of community to improve their work and knowledge of the medium.

Process Technology Students

Sponsor: Karen Kupsa, ext. 536

The Process Technology Club brings in professionals from local industries to help with interviews and resume writing specific to the field. The club plans fundraising activities to obtain additional equipment to install in the C.O.M. mini-refinery (located on campus). The mini-refinery helps students learn more about field operations and become more familiar with refineries. The club provides assistance with class work, and has plans to use alumni to assist new students.

Society of Mexican American Engineers & Scientists (MAES)

Sponsor: P. Early, ext. 404

The MAES student chapter exists to develop a working network with area high schools and universities, and to encourage minority students to enter the engineering, technology and science fields. The club promotes professional advancement for minority engineers and scientists by fostering cooperation among industry, government, and the academic and professional communities for the improvement of educational and employment opportunities.

Student Activities Board

Sponsor: Maryann Urick, ext. 418

The primary function of the Student Activities Board is to plan, develop and conduct educational, recreational, social, cultural and entertainment programs for the College community. It is an opportunity for students to help determine how their student activities fees should be spent. In addition, participants have the chance to develop leadership skills, learn to organize and present special events, and meet people. All credit students are invited to participate. Participants have the chance to earn $200 and $100 scholarships.

Student Art Association

Sponsor: Mark Greenwalt, ext. 637

The Student Art Association brings together those interested in fine arts and provides artistic experiences to COM students, faculty, and community.

Student Government

Advisor: Mara Smith, ext. 660

The Student Government is comprised of campuswide elected student officers and one representative from each recognized club, and serves as an umbrella organization for all student clubs and organizations. The Student Government's primary function is to represent the student body in all dealings with the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty and staff organizations, all college student clubs and organizations and the public. The Student Government gives students a voice in the governance of the College. Elections are conducted annually and meetings are held monthly.

Students for Christ

Sponsor: Tammy Stafford, ext. 417

The Students for Christ Club is a nondenominational organization dedicated to helping students explore spirituality. The group is open to Christians, non- Christians, and all interested students. Members pray for the campus, the world, and one another. The club encourages growth and fellowship among students.

Texas Student Nurses Association (TSNA)

Sponsors: Arlinda Garner, ext. 460, and Elaine Renola, ext. 456

This pre-professional organization seeks to aid the development of individual students, and to encourage future health professionals to contribute to improving the health care of all people. The organization sponsors programs and activities that are designed to contribute to the personal and professional growth of its members.
