Success is what counts.
Achieving the Dream is a multiyear, national initiative to help more community college students succeed, particularly low-income students and students of color.
Each ATD institution identifies student populations that currently experience low rates of success, develops interventions to improve student outcomes and measures changes in student success. The goals of the initiative are to increase the number of low-income students and students of color who:
- successfully complete development courses and progress to credit-bearing,
- enroll in and successfully complete gatekeeper courses,
- complete their courses with a grade of C or higher,
- reenroll from one semester to the next and
- earn certificates and degrees.
Ultimately, the initiative seeks to help more students achieve their individual goals, which may include obtaining a better job, earning a community college certificate or degree and/or attaining a bachelor's degree.
Part of the Achieving the Dream initiative at COM is the class Psychology for Success.
COM Psychology for Success students speak out
About the class...
“I never had a dull time in this class.”
“By the second week, I didn’t think of it as a class anymore but a group of close friends who discussed life issues.”
“Some of the things I enjoyed about the class were things like scavenger hunts, group projects and lots of self-help projects.”
“This class does not just help you in college, but it also helps you in life.”
“I look forward to looking back on my journals the further I get in my education and seeing how far I have come.”
How it made a difference for them...
“My family and friends have seen a difference in me and the choices I make.”
“I had so much fear about failing that I could not think about anything else. Old tapes of the past were playing the same old song. … Well, this class has helped me erase old tapes from the past.”
“I have learned how to better understand my emotions and what fuels them."
“My money-managing skills have definitely improved. I save $200 every paycheck and somehow my spending habits leave me with money in my pocket even after I receive a new paycheck.”
“It has helped me be a lot more organized at home and at school.”
“Now I know I am capable of anything … as long as I set my mind to it and draw up a plan and execute.”
